Powershell Script for Managing my Photos

0 comments
I just quickly created the following script that scans a given folder (such as DCIM) and creates unique date folders and moves all files into their appropriate date folder based on LastWriteTime.

It seems to be working pretty good.

foreach($photo_file in dir)
{
$folder = ".\" + $photo_file.LastWriteTime.ToString("yyyy-MM-dd")
if(!(Test-Path $folder))
{
md $folder
}

move $photo_file $folder
}

Added Local Auctions to Local Events Feed

One of the things that is great to be "in the know" about is local auctions where great deals can be had by the scrupulous buyer.

I've added a Nevada auctions listing to my local events feed.

If you are a Reno/Carson/Tahoe local subscribe to my local events feed.

Google vs Bing

Today to my surprise I found that a number of my searches worked better on Bing than they did on Google.

Being a programmer that has built a search engine before - my searches usually have a high degree of specificity. I've been using internet search since highschool and understand the querying concepts.

Within the last 6 months I've noticed that Google's search algorithm and query behavior has been deteriorating. I used to enjoy typing exact phrases with dashes such as:

to-be-or-not-to-be

Rather than have to arrow over to the phrase and key in quotation marks. No more, Google took that feature away. Furthermore Google is now automatically mucking with my queries. If I enter something in plural form - I'm usually looking for that word to match exactly. No more, Google wants to dumb down the search and find plural and singular forms... I'm also a little weary of Google advocating Chrome. Many people prefer the flexibility that Firefox offers and don't want to be coerced into another application like Microsoft has done in the past.

It's all a bit saddening really...

I don't really care for the "Bing" name. I think that Microsoft marketed the live.com product suite incorrectly. The word Live is only 4 letters and is a great name. Microsoft needs to kill off the MSN division and get back to the basics. Stop confusing the customer...

So just this morning I was doing a search with high specificity. Google returned 3,440 hits and Bing returned 46,600.

If Google can get it's act together -I'm thinking I'm going to be shorting Google's stock...

3D Model of my Home

Got around to modelling my home a few weeks ago.  I'm currently in the review qeueu to have it added to Google Earth.

The end goal is to eventually build out an application framework for home automation with a heads up display of the aspects of a home.  Unfortunately the Google Sketchup software has limited compatibility with .NET.

Windows 7 - Compaq R3000z Drivers

I have an old Compaq R3000z laptop with the following specs:
  • Celeron 2.8GHz
  • 1GB
  • 30GB HD
  • Realtek AC'97 audio
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9000IGP 9000/IGP
The laptop doesn't really have Vista capable drivers so getting it to work with Windows 7 RC1 was a challenge.  I ended up using the following drivers:

Video
 Toshiba 9000IGP XP Driver (Not Aero compatible but does have the proper monitor resolution and some accelleration of the desktop)

I've never heard the name Janet Tavakoli before but I found a great Q&A Youtube video on her.  In this highly recommended video she discusses, in easy to understand words, the history behind our current financial mess and where we are at today.

Organization Tip: Create a Local Events Folder in Google Reader

2 comments
One of the latest buzz words these days is "staycation" which is a vacation that does not require leaving your own city or region. Staycations are becoming popular due to our current economic hardships and increased family budget constraints. Last year my wife and I took an extended weekend off and stayed at the Silver Legacy in Reno. We gambled, watched a few shows, tried out some of the great restaurants and had a great time.

Google Reader (Reader) is an online free tool that allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds that have become prominent on the web. The benefit is that the news comes to you - as long as you subscribe to the feeds that interest you. Below I will describe how you can use Reader to monitor local event calendars for shows, concerts and more.

Being from the Reno/Tahoe area we have a rich events calendar and a number of events pop up from time to time that I miss out on. Today I decided to remedy the situation and create a Reader folder called "local events". I scoured the web for local events feeds. Places I searched include some of our local casinos, our local news paper web sites and searches on google for things like "local events reno rss".

I've made my reno/tahoe local events folder public and it can be viewed and subscribed to here:

Happy staycationing!
